Testimonials
The most rewarding part of volunteering at a school is the students. When I walk in, they all shout, 'HI MISS MICHELLE!!!' A few times, the entire class has run from their positions on the carpet to hug me or say hi.
– Michelle Chin, recent college graduate, Bilingual Spanish Classroom Assistant
Sometimes I think that I have learned more from the students than I have taught them.
– Lloyd Wrath, retired ship captain, Kindergarten Tutor
One little boy was having a rough time choosing a topic for a writing assignment so I sat down to help him and he finally chose gorillas. From that day forward I was his best pal. I learned that the smallest amount of attention can inspire a child to want to learn and find answers on their own.

San Francisco School Volunteers and San Francisco Education Fund are merging!
By joining our two longstanding organizations dedicated to improving our public schools, we will integrate programs to address pressing education challenges in new and more powerful ways.
The new Ed Fund will build on the proven work of each organization to utilize multiple approaches to meet student and teacher needs at individual school sites while also acting as a community catalyst for district wide change and school reform. We are in the process of uniting our programs and are eager to share more details over the coming weeks. Please contact us with any questions. We welcome your involvement.
Michelle Obama commends school volunteers
On Monday, June 22, U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama and California First Lady Maria Shriver joined 500 volunteers building a fantastic new intergenerational playground for the Bayview community.
The work that the playground volunteers completed and the work our 1,500 volunteers did throughout this school year is the type of commitment and investment that the Obama administration would like to see from all Americans.
“Government can rebuild some schools but it is people we need to serve as mentors and tutors in those schools. This new Obama administration doesn't view service as something separate from our national priorities. We have an administration that understands that service is the key to achieving our national priorities,” said Michelle Obama.
